You need a passport to travel to Mexico!
Closest airport to San Miguel de Allende is Leon, Guanajuato (BJX), with daily flights from several International Airports. It’s a small airport (compared to most), and not at all intimidating. The drive to San Miguel takes about an hour and a half – an interesting drive on one of the local shuttle services, for about $28 each way.
Drivers meet you as you come through customs, holding placards with your name(s).
Be sure to use the restroom facilities at the airport as there are no stops on the way to San Miguel!
Either of these shuttle services are reasonable, safe, and dependable – you can make your reservations online (advanced reservations are required). Payment can be made online or in cash to the driver.

Many people prefer, or must, fly into Mexico City. There are bus services from Mexico City to Queretaro (about three hours), and then an hour shuttle ride into San Miguel. Either of the above shuttle services will help you schedule your transportation.
