90-Minute Workshop. Session #3: Friday, February 17, 3:15PM – 4:45PM
Introduction to Travel Writing
Have you always wanted to write about your travels but don’t now where to start? Join award-winning travel author Laurie Gough in this mini workshop focusing on what makes a good travel story.
You’ll learn that to be an effective travel writer you must lead the reader into the wonder of the place you’re describing, always remembering that your experience can only be conveyed through details.
We’ll discuss ‘finding’ the story and how this isn’t something you can anticipate before leaving; traveling for a story as opposed to traveling for travel’s sake; ideas on how to craft your stories; how the ‘quest’ makes for a good travel story; the various types of travel writing; how to begin your stories to catch the reader’s (and an editor’s) attention, and how to get published in today’s rapidly changing market.
Lauded by Time magazine as “one of the new generation of intrepid female travel writers,” Laurie Gough is author of Kiss the Sunset Pig (Penguin), and Kite Strings of the Southern Cross: A Woman’s Travel Odyssey, shortlisted for the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, and silver medal winner of ForeWord Magazine’s Travel Book of the Year in the US.
Twenty of her stories have been anthologized in literary travel books, and besides being a regular contributor to The Globe and Mail, she has written for The L.A. Times, salon.com, The National Post, The Vancouver Sun, Canadian Geographic, The Daily Express, Caribbean Travel + Life, among others. See: www.lauriegough.com
“The best travel book I’ve read in years. It’s the kind of book you want every traveler you know to read.” ~Brad Newsham, author of Take Me With You
“Reading this book is like traveling all over again, like meeting a soulmate in a far-off place, someone you know you can trust, someone who immediately understands you, and who is just waiting for the stars to come out and the campfire to be lit, so you can start swapping your worldly tales.” ~salon.com
“Gough records everything she sees with a subtle wit, a lyrical turn of phrase, and a remarkably open mind. Her writing is vigorous, sensual and visual. She sweeps the reader into her world.” ~The Globe and Mail G
